Yumi Chair

Yumi is the Japanese word for an archery bow and refers to the continuous curved brace detail that sweeps from the top of the backrest down to meet the front legs, holding the chair together the way a strung bow holds its tension. A dining chair without arms, Yumi's structure is fully legible. Another Yamakawa original, it is brought into production after Gabriel Tan's careful work of contemporisation that fully respects the original design. Retaining the eloquent curves that give it the graphic quality that defines Yamakawa's approach to metalwork, the generous seat and backrest are woven in natural black rattan in a tight but still open weave, allowing light to pass through it, offering Yumi a visual lightness.
