The Rio Rug is defined by the flowing line that cuts down its middle: a single fluid boundary which crosses the surface of the woolen rug and divides it into two distinct fields. It is this boundary that gives Rio its name and its character. Like a meandering river seen from above, the line is at once a division and a natural connection, where on either side of it, two things change: the colour shifts, subtly, in a tonal modulation; and what is more immediately noticed is the surface itself. Two pile heights, one cut at 25mm and the other at 16mm, give Rio the appearance of riverwater meeting its bank: one side full and yielding, the other close and firm.
As daylight moves across the room, the physical ridge where the two pile heights meet catches raking light and casts a soft shadow that traces and retraces the line through the day, making the rug subtly different in the morning than it is by evening. It is a detail that rewards the attention that comes from living with it over time. Large in format and neutral in palette, with warm, earthy tones, Rio is a rug that works well beneath a generous dining table, anchoring a lounge arrangement, or simply laid out in a room with good natural light.
