Cenote Coffee Table

A cenote is a natural opening in the Earth: a circular aperture at the surface, giving way to depth below. The name fits this table with unusual precision, where three circular cut-outs punctuate the tabletop, each one a portal through which a leg appears to rise, as though the vertical and horizontal planes have been made to intersect rather than merely meet. The effect is one of lightness and transparency: less a piece of furniture, and more a small landscape that floats above something beneath it. The form began as an obsession with circles, and the contrast between purely geometric ones and a softly organic silhouette. That tension and interplay is apparent. Cenote's contoured top is gently irregular, while its cut-outs are perfect circles: two different forms in careful negotiation. Crafted in solid wood, the natural graining of the wood tempers what could otherwise seem like a graphic exercise, lending material warmth to the geometry. Whether as a centrepiece accompanying a sofa set or anchoring a reading corner, the Cenote Coffee Table is a functional surface where books and objects naturally settle into and around its openings.
