The fourth edition of Lisbon by Design, held from 22 to 26 May 2024, transformed the magnificent Palacete Gomes Freire into a vibrant showcase of exceptional design. Curated by Julie de Halleux, the fair epitomised the "Made in Portugal" ethos, featuring design objects, crafts, furniture, and lighting that blend contemporary aesthetics with Portuguese heritage craftsmanship. This year's event gathered together a discerning audience of design enthusiasts, collectors, industry professionals, and a curious general public seeking to beautify their homes, all eager to explore the innovative and collaborative spirit that defines Lisbon by Design through the exciting new pieces on display.
The fair welcomed an earnest and exuberant crowd on opening day, and over the duration of the fair, almost 2000 people had passed through, admiring and appreciating new works by 24 designers. Amongst the highlights, were works by Brazilian artist Bhya Sugai for Azure, ceramic furniture and lighting by Alan Louis, and a tile installation by Portuguese heritage tile manufacturer Viuva Lamego.

Origin Made debuted at Lisbon by Design by unveiling Part I of our 2024 Collection, featuring four new designs, all united by the theme "Materials Intention". This theme underscored the deliberate and thoughtful pairings of natural materials with minimal forms, resulting in a beguiling interplay of textures and shapes. Each piece embodied this philosophy, showcasing Origin Made's commitment to exceptional craftsmanship and timeless design.
Visitors were able to experience our newly launched designs alongside perennial favourites, displayed in the serene Belem Room of the historic Palacete Gomes Freire. Notably featured were the Ark Lamp in raw travertine, and the distinct Charred Vases in Barro Preto. The Coluna and Portal Vases, Ancora Candle Holders, and Evora Side Table also made their presence felt in the tranquil setting, embodying our brand's philosophy of championing materiality and the human touch.
The Alturas Pedestals, one of the new designs launched, are handcrafted from solid ash wood by master carpenter Carlos Barbosa, and offer a sturdy surface to elevate and showcase cherished objects. Available in three distinct heights and two finishes, these versatile platforms allow the creation of a personalized display that complements any interior.
The second new design, and one of the key pieces in the 2024 collection, is the Veil Cabinet by Norwegian designer Silje Nesdal. Her maiden collaboration with Origin Made is inspired by traditional Japanese Noren curtains, and feature linen sheets as doors. This clever design creates a sense of intrigue, allowing glimpses of objects stored 'hidden' behind the 'veil'. The Veil Cabinets come in two variations — a taller, statuesque form, and a lower, more elongated option, ensuring the perfect fit for diverse spaces.
The two other new designs launched were the Heirloom Lamp and Nest Lamp, both highly versatile light fittings that can be either wall- or ceiling-mounted.
The Nest Lamps, shown in the image below, are handcarved with Rosa Portugal Marble and Estremoz Medio Marble and feature a mouth-blown glass sphere nestled in the concavity of the base, hence the name. These lamps are the result of combining the skills of master woodworkers, and expert stonemasons with the know-how of a family-owned lamp-making workshop located close to Porto, and the vision of Origin Made’s creative director and co-founder Gabriel Tan. The Nest Lamp also comes in Pele de Tigre Marble, and natural, and smoked ash wood versions, offering multiple configurations for a variety of interiors.
Origin Made's participation in the 2024 edition of Lisbon by Design was a remarkable experience, enriched by the energy, warmth, and perspectives exchanged throughout the fair. We are immensely grateful for the opportunity to share Part I of our 2024 collection and are looking forward to unveiling Part II at 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen.
Look out for another four new designs which will be revealed at "Enter the Salon", a joint exhibition of international brands curated by Signe Hytte, that will take place from 12 to 14 June at The Conary, a historic townhouse in downtown Copenhagen.
