Yuzuru Yamakawa was among the most gifted furniture designers of twentieth-century Japan, working with rattan and metal in a way that broke new ground. Gabriel Tan worked to contemporise the Tsuki Chair, bringing it in line with present-day production methods and market expectations by simplifying its construction and material specification while preserving the integrity of Yamakawa's original vision.
Tsuki means moon in Japanese, thus named due to the chair's backrest: a continuous rod of black metal that rises from the seat, looping expressively in a full arc, evoking the curve of a crescent moon. Natural black rattan is wound tightly across the seat and also over the arc of the backrest and into the armrests, unified in tone with the black aluminium frame, differentiated only by the contrast between hard metal and woven rattan surface.
