The starting point for Kanpai, which means bell in Basque, was the memory of a turtle-shaped bell belonging to Basque designer Ander Lizaso's grandparents. Kanpai's form is simple and straightforward: a domed volume sits above a banded collar, the geometry familiar and almost archetypal.
The entire form is made from sand-cast aluminium, raw and untreated. Sand-casting is an ancient process where molten metal is poured into a mould formed from compacted sand. This gives the pendant its characteristic finish, showing the marks of its production proudly. The weight of the material is felt even from a distance, adding gravitas to its shape. The Kanpai Pendant Lamp works well as a single suspended light or in an intentional arrangement of multiples, where the repetition of its form in a space makes a statement.
